Paediatric Occupational Therapy

Building functional skills for greater independence!

At Thrive Speech Therapy Centres, our occupational therapists (OTs) support skill development at every stage — from toileting and dressing to pencil grip and self-regulation. Since every child's developmental journey is unique, we help build skills step by step through personalized, engaging practices designed to help each child thrive and reach their full potential.

Motor Skills

0 - 18 years old

Child Riding Bicycle

2 years old - 18 years old

From using a pencil to playing at the park, we help children develop the motor skills needed for everyday life. By focusing on essential building blocks like coordination, balance, and strength, we empower children to reach their goals with confidence.

We provide assessment and intervention for:

  • Body Connection - Spatial awareness and motor planning

  • Gross motor skills - Balance, coordination, and strength of large muscles used to crawl, sit up, walk, run, jump, kick and catch a ball, ride a bike, etc.

  • Fine motor skills - Coordination, strength, and control of small muscles used to button a shirt, hold a crayon, open a marker, use a spoon, tie shoelaces, etc.

Daily Routines and Life Skills

Children have important "jobs" to do each day such as playing, learning, and taking care of themselves. We partner with families to turn daily challenges into opportunities for growth and connection, helping children build independence in the activities that define their daily lives.

We provide assessment and intervention for:

  • Self-Care - Toileting, dressing, and personal hygiene

  • Navigating the Day - Transitions and time management

  • Feeding and Eating - Oral motor skills, self-feeding, picky eating

  • Environmental Confidence - Feeling safe, regulated, and confident in new environments

Self-Regulation and Sensory Processing

Every child perceives the world in a unique way. For some, processing sensory information—such as the hum of a light or the texture of certain fabrics—can feel overwhelming, impacting their ability to connect, learn, and play. We help children and youth navigate these sensory experiences and develop self-regulation skills, providing them with the tools required to thrive and feel safe in their environments.

We provide assessment and intervention for:

  • Sensory Processing - Sensitivities to textures, sounds, or movement

  • Emotional Resilience - Managing intense or quick emotional changes

  • Engagement - Maintaining an optimal state of alertness or calmness

  • Interoception - Developing the brain’s ability to perceive internal bodily signals

How it Works

Initial consultation

Assessment

This introductory appointment allows us to get to know you and your child. During this time, we gather essential information regarding your child's medical history, development, and family background. We also discuss your child's strengths, interests, and your primary areas of concern to help guide the assessment process.

To understand your child's unique developmental and sensory profile, our occupational therapists utilize a combination of clinical observations, standardized assessments, informal measures, as well as caregiver reports.

Analysis

Goal Setting

Together, we will review the results and recommendations, ensuring you have ample opportunity to ask questions. From there, we develop a customized intervention plan by setting specific therapy goals and establishing the optimal frequency and duration for your child's sessions.

Intervention Plan

The intervention plan is implemented. Together, we continuously evaluate and adapt the therapy goals to support your child's ongoing growth and success.

Following the assessment, the occupational therapist analyzes the results to identify your child's strengths and needs, highlighting any delays in skill development that require targeted support. This information is used to develop a tailored intervention plan.
